Semeling, Kedah

Ever heard of Semeling? It is near Sg Petani, where the AIMST University is situated. AIMST will be organizing the Human Patient Simulator Network (HPSN) workshop, and they are inviting me to be one of the adjunct faculty. We were the host for the HPSN last year. Our university has bought a RM 3.5 million medical simulation technology from METI. What is medical simulation? Well, that needs another entry later, as I am now in the car looking for Semeling, blogging from my HTC.

The Lost World Of Tambun

As promised to my daughter, our next trip is to the LWOT. So here we are, enjoying ourselves. We bring along my mother. Our overall experience- it is much much much better than AFamosa. The best part is the Tambun Hot Spring....I really submerge myself few times in the hot water (temp is around 40 to 50C). Also manage to persuade my mum to do the same. Khadijah also has so much fun in the water and also at the carousel. There are less people and the food is much better and cheaper.

We also take a ride on storm-rider! The last time I was in any ride was the frightening Kamikaze which I rode back then at the fun fair at St Andrews. The experience of Kamikaze indeed was very frightening for me to ever ride any ride or roller coaster again. However my adrenaline push made me take the ride, Khadijah cries, people vomit and me...I close my eyes all the way and mengucap tak habis2. That's it, no more ride....ever

Anaesthesia?

16 October 1846
The first successful public demonstration of general anesthesia by William Thomas Green Morton.

I was often asked what specialty I am in. When I mentioned anaesthesia, many are often curious of what does it means or is it all that I do? As an anaesthetist, apart from managing anaesthesia for surgical patients, we are also involved in patient care in the intensive care unit, acute and chronic pain management and obstetric analgesia service. It is a young specialty as compared to other specialty, and very often the general population are not aware of it. That is why now, 16th October is celebrated as anaesthesia day...one of the aim is the increase the pubic awareness and knowledge. It is the day when William G Morton first did a public demonstration of anaesthesia....

Quite an interesting reading on anaesthesia is on Wikipedia
Anesthesia, or anaesthesia (see spelling differences; from Greek αν-, an-, "without"; and αἲσθησις, aisthēsis, "sensation"), has traditionally meant the condition of having sensation (including the feeling of pain) blocked. This allows patients to undergo surgery and other procedures without the distress and pain they would otherwise experience. The word was coined by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. in 1846. Another definition is a "reversible lack of awareness", whether this is a total lack of awareness (e.g. a general anaesthestic) or a lack of awareness of a part of a the body such as a spinal anaesthetic or another nerve block would cause. Anesthesia differs from analgesia in blocking all sensation, not only pain...............taken from wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anesthesia

Daily Blessings

Alhamdulillah............

Streamyx....at last

At last, we signed up for a streamyx connection, after being so frustrated with the Digi line at our house...maklumlah dok kampungkan, mana dapat EDGE or 3G. Anyway, I think I got a good offer at the recent PC fair. The bill includes a the TM net fix line, so I don't have to pay RM26 per month for the line which I don't use!!! That is the major factor that inhibit us from signing up before (lokek betul, nak sedekah buta2 kat TM ye). Already bought a wireless connection, can't wait for the connection to be set up.

So now I really have the internet assess all the time....at UIA, hospital, home and even mobile in my HTC (from the Digi Edge connection)....to justify these, I really need to start writing up scientific papers! Now ni, banyak main2 je..........

A very sad moment

Got bad news today, my BIL had just lost his twin babies at 22 weeks of pregnancy....after almost 8 years of marriage and 2 attempts of IUI. The whole family were very sad today. We spent this morning at the mosque, graveyard and hospital before being stuck in this meeting!!! So sleepy today, since can't sleep last night after hearing the news. This is all Allah's plan. This makes me very grateful for our only child. It is not our place to question Allah's plan, only He who knows everything.

Khadijah's Birthday Party

Her birthday is on the 27th November. But she has been pressing me to celebrate her birthday as soon as November comes. Since we will be quite busy at the end of this month with travelling and my on calls, we decide to celebrate her birthday this weekend...on Saturday. It will be kid's day only..as opposed to our other makan-makan hostings. I have prepared few games for the kids activities.

Kemamam 27th October

I was pretty bored for the first 2 days of the recent long holiday. My hubby was busy with his NGO work, so we were unable to go away from Kuantan. However we made short trip away to Kuantan on the last day of the weekend stretch holiday. We went to Kemaman. The weather was pretty hot, so we were unable to go to the beaches. Instead we went shopping....entahlah shopping apa2 entahnya. We went to the new Mesra Mall, however we were quite disappointed as there were not many shops as we expected. But the kids really had a good time!!!

Yang belum kunjung tiba

Has been left with one car, since the one that has been promised to arrive last week, has not been arriving yet...........After 10 years of working, need to reward myself once in a while. Hopefully it is a good choice, insyaAllah.

Read review here.
Forum here and here.

Update...
At last tiba on the 24th October 2008, after 2+ weeks of promise....so far quite happy with the car. Already went to Kemaman with my MIL, SIL, her husband and their 4 kids...ha ha ha...boleh muat 5 dewasa and 4 kids, not too bad. Will be going to Sg Petani at the end of November. So far can beat our old Mitsubishi Space Wagon in terms of spacing...someone wonder why we need such a big car for a small family like us....the answer is because we are always travelling with others, be it my mother, MIL, sisters or brothers....the more the merrier. Last year we have travelled with my mother, sister and her hubby to Cameron Highland, and 2 years ago, we travelled all the way to Penang, Kedah and Langkawi, again with my mother and sister. That's why we need a spacious car. Furthermore I like to lie down with my daughter when we are travelling alone, very comfy, can sleep like a baby....

My new 'toy'

Read review here.

My 2 previous Sony Digicam had problems after 2-3 years of heavy use. Was thinking of getting another model. But yesterday came across this at Courts Mammoth clearance sale.....and at half price! Can't run away from Sony.....Dah jodohnya kot....

Cupping for gout

Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Healing is to be found in three things: drinking honey, the knife of the cupper, and cauterization of fire.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/136).

According to a hadeeth narrated by Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “If there is any good in your medical treatments, it is in the knife of the cupper, drinking honey, or cauterization with fire, as appropriate to the cause of the illness, but I would not like to be cauterized.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/139)

Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was treated with cupping, and he paid the cupper his fee.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/124; Muslim 1202).

Anas ibn Maalik (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allaah was treated with cupping by Abu Tayyibah. He commanded that he should be given two measures of food, and he spoke with his tax-collectors, who reduced his taxes. He said, “The best treatment you can use is cupping.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/126; Muslim, 1577)

24th Ramadhan

The end of Ramadhan is near. People are busy with their Raya preparation. Shopping malls are packed with people. It should be a sad occasion as Ramadhan, the blessed month is leaving us....Have we grabbed this golden opportunity to acquire Allah's blessing??? Or we are so busy with the Raya preparation.......

Taj Mahal, Agra

Have been a bit unwell since back from Delhi, maybe due the heat, unfreshed air and dehydration during the visit. The visit was really eventful....especially due to the bomb explosion....we were really near the explosion area, breaking our fast at McDonald. Can't imagine otherwise. Secondly the experience of riding the Tuk Tuk on Indian roads...what a nightmare! Finally the chance to visit Taj Mahal, the 37th wonder of the world. Have not been able to post anything due to the unavailability of free internet access eventhough we stayed at a 5 star hotel!
Thinking back...I had been fortunate to have all these experience. All my overseas trip to Philippines, United States and India within these past 2 years happened not due to my effort. People around me do research, write papers etc for presentations at medical conferences. Whereas I had been put in a situation where I could not refuse to go, surely not due to my effort! To date I have not written any paper etc or conduct any research required by the university...I am still in my comfort zone! Nevertheless I value this opportunity since I could experience other culture and see how others live

Still waiting in KLIA

Still waiting in KLIA for the connecting flight to Delhi. Due to the unavailability of afternoon flight from Kuantan to KL, I need to take the morning flight, eventhough the flight to Delhi is at 630pm...so there's 6 hours wasted!!! Luckily the wireless network here is quite good, so I can do some work and some mind rambling blogging entry! There is another 3 hours to go. Try to book a vacation via AirAsia package and do some internet shopping, but decided against it since this wireless connection is unsecured. Will do it later. I am still worried about the study. So many things not settled yet, so many things to sort out....sigh....
What to do, I have some traits of OCD, everything I do must be perfectly in order. If not my mind will keep on worrying. Need to remind myself so many times that everything has been planned by Allah swt....we just need to do our best, insyaAllah...

India Trip

I am at KLIA, on the way to New Delhi, India for a meeting. I am half-heartedly going, first due to the fasting month, and secondly the need to involve myself in this research trial. I know that this trial is good for my future as a lecturer in IIUM. But I am sooooo lazy. I have no intention beforehand to burden myself with researches etc. I am content with what I have now. I felt that I have put all my efforts in my studies as an undergraduates, medical officers and postgraduates. I need a break.....in fact 2 years of break, really made me lazy.....he he he.
By involving myself in this research, I really need to be evaluating the patients on a daily basis for a month!!! Not mentioning the need to screen patients, taking consent, administer drugs and taking blood...and there is a possibility of me needing to come early in the morning, like 2 to 3 am. Oh God, I am so lazy!!! With my clinical works and on calls 5 to 6 times per month and teaching duties, I find it hard to concentrate on other things....I know I am whining, other peoples made more sacrifices than me, other lectures involve in many researches and subspecialty training. But they have their motivation. As for me, I am content with what I have now. I don't mind being a chronic specialist, a chronic assistant professor...I have been avoiding my boss persuasion to do a subspecialty training so far. But I don't think I can escape anymore since the university's KPI is for each lecturer to have a subspecialty training.
Wake up Azrina....you have rest for quite some time now. You need to progress from where you are!!!! My husband remind me that all this has been ordained by Allah, and we must make the best of it. InsyaAllah...I will try to enjoy this trip first and think about the research when the time comes. InsyaAllah I shall bear it, after all I had bear the hardship of housemanship and junior MOs. Will try to post some pics later!

Digi, digi, when are you going for 3G???

The internet connection has been reaaaaaaaaaaally slow lately. Has been expecting Digi to provide the 3G connection since early this year. Rumours are not always true...Have to be patience until end of this year. If still no sign, need to change. What to do, everything in Malaysia has to be about cronyism, nepotism etc....So far I am happy with the Digi service....sigh.....

The Holy Quran

First comes that beautiful Surah
The Opening Chapter of Seven Verses
Rightly called the Essence of the Book
It teaches us the perfect Prayer
For if we can pray aright, it means
That we have some knowledge of God
And His atributes of His relations
To us and His creation, which includes
Ourselves: that we glimpse the source
From which we come, and that final goal
Which is our spiritual destiny
Under God's true judgement: then
We offer ourselves to God and seek His light.

Prayer is the heart of religion and faith
But how shall we pray? What words shall convey
The yearnings of our miserable ignorant hearts
To the Knower of all Is it worthy of Him
Or our spiritual nature to ask
For vanities, or even for such physical needs
As our daily bread? The Inspired
One taught us a prayer that sums up our faith
Our hope, and our aspiration in things that matter
We think in devotion of God's name and His Nature
We praise Him for His creation and His Cherishing care
We call to mind the realities, seen and unseen
We offer Him worship and ask His guidance
And we know the straight from the crooked path
By the light of His grace that illumines the righteous

Abdullah Yusuf Ali

Peringatan
